Why alcohol isn’t the answer to unwinding after a stressful day?

Many people turn to alcohol as a quick way to unwind after a stressful day, but while it may offer temporary relief, the long-term impact on health can be significant. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), regular alcohol consumption can disrupt brain communication pathways, leading to changes in mood, behavior, cognitive function and physical coordination. It also increases the risk of serious heart conditions such as cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, stroke, and high blood pressure. Prolonged use can harm the liver, resulting in conditions like fatty liver, hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Additionally, alcohol affects the pancreas and raises the likelihood of alcohol-related cancers. Instead of normalizing alcohol use to manage stress, consider healthier alternatives for coping with workday stress such as:

  1. Post work routine – establish a calming post-work routine like lighting a candle, making tea, or changing into cozy clothes to signal the end of the workday.

  2. Nature therapy – spend time in nature, whether it’s a park, garden, or your backyard, to reconnect and ground yourself.

  3. Creative outlet – engage in something artistic like drawing, writing, or crafting to shift your brain into a creative and relaxed state.

  4. Meditation – try a 5-10 minute guided meditation or deep breathing technique to calm your nervous system and improve focus.

  5. Physical release – whether it’s a quick run, dancing around your living room, or practicing tai chi, moving your body can shake off the day's stress.

  6. Mindful cooking – prepare a simple meal from scratch, focusing on the textures, colors, and smells to enjoy the process.

  7. Journaling – reflect on three positive moments from your day, big or small, to shift your focus to the positive.

  8. Digital detox – set a time to disconnect from all devices, giving your brain space to relax without distractions.

  9. Reading – read something inspiring, soothing, or educational that helps you mentally shift gears.
