Understanding neurodivergence: a different way of thinking

"Neurodivergent" is a non-medical term used to describe individuals whose brains function differently from the typical brain. Neurodivergent individuals often have unique ways of thinking, learning, communicating, processing information and behaving. These differences may affect interpersonal skills such as emotional awareness, social engagement, and teamwork. Neurodivergent individuals often face sensory challenges, which can include being in close physical quarters with someone, loud noises, bright lights or displaying self-soothing behaviors like rocking back and forth and fidgeting with hands or objects. A few conditions that fall under neurodivergence include:

ADHD Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, and impulse control.

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder): challenges with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors.

Dyslexia: difficulty with reading and interpreting words.

Dyscalculia: difficulty with understanding and performing math-related tasks.

Dysgraphia: difficulty with writing, including spelling and handwriting.

Down syndrome: a genetic condition causing developmental delays and intellectual disabilities.

If you think you might be neurodivergent, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation.
